An Atlanta woman who grew up in Augusta and studied as a peer with internationally renowned vocalist Jesseye Norman will return home this weekend to display her talents.
Bernice Hogan Hall took a lengthy hiatus to pursue family matters and her education before returning to the stage.
The opera singer and lyric soprano will perform a variety of songs during Sunday's Music at the Morris -- a series of monthly performances at the Morris Museum of Art.
"It's always nice to present an Augusta native like Mrs. Hall and give her a chance to perform for her hometown," said David Tucker, curator of education at the downtown museum.
The free 2 p.m. event will feature Mrs. Hall in a solo vocal setting as she performs spirituals, operatic and oratorical songs. As an Augusta youth, Mrs. Hall lived near and attended C.T. Walker Elementary School on Wrightsboro Road. She graduated from Immaculate Conception School in 1964.
She said her vocal and piano coach, Evelyn Starks, . helped her become the musician she is today.
Mrs. Hall said she's not nervous about her first Augusta performance in several years.
"Actually, I'm anticipating it," she said during a recent phone interview.
Ellis Johnson, a Morris advisory board member, said Mrs. Hall and Ms. Norman have both represented Augusta's vocal community in a positive way.
"I highly recommended Mrs. Hall for the series," said Mr. Johnson, also a board member of the Jesseye Norman School of the Arts.
Mrs. Hall has performed with the Atlanta Theatre Music Guild, the Capitol City Opera Company, Atlanta Civic Opera Company (artist-in residence program) and the Americolor Opera Alliance. She also continues to teach piano and voice and is a pianist, organist and choir director at Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta.
