Plan is under way to honor Augusta stars

After 10 years of professional hockey in Augusta, Lynx fans have seen their fair share of talented players skate through James Brown Arena. A decade's worth of history has accumulated, and now it appears it will soon have a home.

Augusta Ice Sports Center, now under the direction of former Augusta Lynx defenseman Wes Swinson, is in the process of creating an Augusta Lynx Hall of Fame. A designated area in the lobby of Augusta's only public ice skating venue once housed an air hockey table and arcade games. Soon it will be a shrine to hockey in Augusta.

"We want to maybe retire some jerseys and put them up here, and maybe have some murals painted on the wall," said Swinson, the newly hired general manager of Augusta Ice Sports Center. "Our main focus is to become a partner with the Lynx."

Lynx co-owner and general manager Dan Troutman said the Lynx were thrilled when Swinson approached them with the idea.

"We told them we'd be very supportive of it. It's a great idea if it's done right," Troutman said.

"That's a good place for it, because in James Brown Arena we can't really do anything permanent in there."

Swinson said the idea of adding a Lynx Hall of Fame is part of a larger effort to improve the perception of Augusta Ice Sports Center.

The facility is closed for major repairs to the rink, but a Nov. 1 grand re-opening is in the works.

Swinson and owner Duncan Crerar said they want Augusta Ice Sports Center to become a much better place to skate for both the Augusta Lynx and the public.

"I played for the Lynx, and I practiced here. It was a dump," Swinson said. "That's not going to happen any more. (Crerar) is spending the money to make sure of that, and we're going to do it right."

Crerar said that repairs to the rink are continuing and grading of the sub-floor likely will begin today. Crerar originally intended for the sports center to close for one month, but problems underneath the ice's sand floor delayed the work.

"Hopefully we'll be putting everything back together this weekend, and by Monday we plan to be making ice," Crerar said. "It looks like we're on schedule."

WHO SHOULD BE IN?

Officials with the Augusta Lynx and Augusta Ice Sports Center said no decisions have been made in regards to who would be part of a Lynx Hall of Fame. Names such as Louis Goulet, the Lynx's all-time leading scorer, and Joel Perrault, the only former player currently in the NHL, come to mind.
