Candidates forum set for tonight

Richmond County school board hopefuls prepare for public event at Paine College

 Candidates seeking election

Seventeen candidates competing for five seats on the Richmond County school board will get a chance today to tell people why they should be elected.

A forum will take place at 6 p.m. in the odeum at Paine College, in the back of the chapel. The event is sponsored by Augusta/Richmond County Community Action Committee Inc.

Another forum for the candidates is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday in the gymnasium at Cross Creek High School on Old Waynesboro Road, and is sponsored by the school's Athletic Booster Club.

Candidates seeking election are:

District 1: Marion Barnes, a retired educator, and Christopher Lowe, an associate minister.

District 4: Incumbent Andrew Jefferson; Alphonza Griffin, a self-employed businessman who was fired this summer from Hephzibah High School over allegations relating to sexual misconduct with a female student; Barnard Harper, director of environmental services at Holiday Inn.

District 8: David Cruise, owner of Cruise Security; Burles Johnson, licensed general contractor of B.A. Johnson Construction; Brad Owens, customer service agent at US Airways; Jeff Padgett, a client advocate for Gracewood State School and Hospital; Fredrick L. Smith, senior engineer at Westinghouse Savannah River Co.

District 9: Venus Cain, chief supply clerk at Fort Gordon; Johnny Hatney, pastor; Willie W. Law IV, inventory/cost accountant at Electrolux Home Improvement; Mildred McDaniel, retired educator.

District 10: Bob Gardner, Army retiree; Helen Minchew, co-owner of a retail business; and Wilson Rice, retired educator.
