Jefferson High School was in mourning Tuesday after students learned that a standout basketball player was among three men killed in a Monday morning car wreck.

Daniel Goza, 18, a senior at Jefferson High in Jackson County, died in a fiery car crash at the intersection of Georgia Highway 82 and Bowman Mill Road in Barrow County.

Also killed was the 28-year-old driver of the truck in which Mr. Goza was riding, Timothy Lee Parker of Jefferson, and a passenger in a second truck involved in the wreck, 23-year-old Kevin Musgrove of Athens. Daniel Thornton, 26, of Athens escaped the accident with minor injuries.

Mr. Parker was an employee with Mr. Goza's father's fencing company, said the player's mother, Jennifer. Jefferson High students were not in school Monday because of a teacher workday.

``Daniel was out of school and offered to go and help him with a job in Winder,'' Mrs. Goza said.

The 1982 Ford F-250 driven by Mr. Parker was heading south on Bowman Mill Road at about 11 a.m. Monday.

On Georgia Highway 82, Mr. Thornton and Mr. Musgrove were traveling west toward Winder in a 1986 Ford F-250.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Mr. Parker failed to yield at a stop sign, pulling into the path of Mr. Thornton's truck.

The collision was ``devastating,'' Barrow County Coroner Sid Griffin said.
