Saddles ablaze for resurgent Valley

WHO'S HOT: Midland Valley. The Mustangs have become the cardiac kids of the Augusta area with their late-game play the past two weeks. David Coursey's field goal at the buzzer lifted the team to victory over Airport two weeks ago. On Friday, Terry Bradley scored the game-tying and game-winning touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime, giving Midland Valley a big win at Chapin.

WHO'S NOT: Aquinas. The Irish have a lot of work to do if they are to make a third consecutive trip to the postseason. Give Aquinas credit for playing a fairly tough schedule, but the team's offense has yet to show much of anything, averaging less than seven points a game.

BEST WIN LAST WEEK: Midland Valley 27, Chapin 21: Don't look now, but the Mustangs are 5-1 after finishing last season 1-9. Midland Valley is in the running for its first playoff berth since 2003.

TOP AREA GAMES THIS WEEK:

1. Blackville-Hilda (7-0) at Bamberg-Ehrhardt (7-0): The rare No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up in Class A. The top-ranked Fighting Hawks take their 22-game winning streak to Bamberg, S.C. The Red Raiders, who lost twice to Blackville-Hilda last season, have scored 42 or more points in every game this season.

2. Screven County (3-2) at Laney (3-2): With the opening of Laney's stadium, those within the Gamecocks' program are concerned about an atmosphere similar to that in the Superdome when the New Orleans Saints returned against Atlanta. Screven County and Laney are coming off bye weeks and should be well-rested.

3. Aiken (7-0) at Irmo (5-2): The Hornets are looking to avenge last season's bumbling performance at Irmo. The 27-12 defeat was Aiken's lone regular-season loss.

THE BIG 6-0: Aiken's 60-point outburst against White Knoll on Friday night is reportedly its highest scoring output in a game in the past four decades. The Hornets eclipsed their 58-point total against Lexington in 1995.

Against the Timberwolves, Aiken led 28-14 at halftime. But the Hornets racked up 20 points in the third and 12 in the fourth.

"Our kids came out in the second half and put it together," Aiken coach Carey Johnson said.

PERFECTION?: Halfway through the season, Thomson appears to have a favorable shot to finish 10-0.

The Bulldogs have scored 26 or more points in every game thus far. Their remaining schedule consists of teams with a combined 10-15 record.

Thomson's lone potential roadblock could come in the last game of the regular season. The Bulldogs play host to Washington County (3-2), and most likely the region title will be on the line.

PERFECTION, PART 2?: Thomas Jefferson seems to be playing, to paraphrase an old golf cliche, a game the rest of the Georgia Independent Schools Association Class A teams are unfamiliar with.

The Jaguars have outscored their six opponents 361-25. That includes their 82-7 win over Curtis Baptist on Friday.

The schedule, though, does get tougher. This week, Thomas Jefferson faces a Nathanael Greene team it lost to in 2004 and squeaked by (28-26) last season.

OFFERED: Jefferson County's A.J. Harmon received a verbal scholarship offer from Georgia after his visit to the Tennessee game Saturday.

The 6-foot-4, 317-pound offensive lineman prospect now holds offers from Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss and South Carolina.
