Breaking the game open
Moreno seeking some highlights against SEC foes

ATHENS, Ga. --- Knowshon Moreno has had his fill of highlight reel moments this season.

The most spectacular plays and the biggest yardage have yet to come against Southeastern Conference teams.

The Georgia redshirt sophomore tailback leaped over a Central Michigan safety in a game he rolled up 168 yards and skied into the end zone for a touchdown against Arizona State when he rushed for 146.

Behind a young offensive line, Moreno's longest run in Georgia's two SEC games against South Carolina and Alabama went for 11 yards.

Now comes Tennessee on Saturday and this question: Can the Bulldogs create enough running room for Moreno to get untracked against the Volunteers, who shut Moreno and Georgia down last year and have been stingy against the run this year?

"We need to, we really need to," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "We've got to get this guy started. He's going to make great runs either way. He's either going to make a great run to get 3 yards or we can get him to that 3-yard-mark and then let him do his thing. He'll still make people miss and still get yards after contact. The whole key is where is that contact coming to begin with?"

Moreno, who will play Saturday despite chipping a bone in his right elbow, averaged 120.5 yards per game during Georgia's 11-game winning streak that was stopped by Alabama in a 41-30 loss on Sept. 27.

Georgia's offensive line -- which could start one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen Saturday -- has been overpowered at the point of attack against big, physical defenses, especially when it comes to creating running room for Moreno.

Moreno was held to 79 rushing yards on 20 carries against a South Carolina team that disrupted the Bulldogs running game with twists. His 34 yards rushing on nine carries against Alabama was the second lowest output of his Georgia career behind only the 30 yards on 13 carries against Tennessee last season in a 35-14 loss.

"It's tough," Moreno said of facing some of the SEC's toughest defenses. "At the same time, you've really got to get better and step your level of game up and make plays. At times when things are not there, you've really got to make a way and get those few extra yards."

Georgia reshuffled its offensive line after the South Carolina game and could make changes this week after rushing for just 50 yards on 16 carries against Alabama.

Freshman Cordy Glenn could replace Chris Davis as the starter at left guard.

Bruising fullback Brannan Southerland will be in the backfield for the first time this season as he returns from a stress fracture in his left foot.

Tennessee is 13th in the nation in rushing defense, allowing 90.6 yards per game, and has allowed only one rushing play of 20 or more yards this season and no 100-yard rushers.

Tennessee is 106th in the nation in scoring at 18 points per game and switched starting quarterbacks last week to sophomore Nick Stephens before a 13-9 win over Northern Illinois.

Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said the Volunteers "defense has played well enough to win really all our games." Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said Tennessee "kicked our butt physically" last year in Knoxville.

"I actually think we're ahead of where we were last year as an offense, but we've still got some young pieces in there and we've got to play on the same page," Bobo said. "We're not doing that right now. We're not executing to the level we need to be executing at especially on a consistent basis."

Richt said he thinks Georgia's offensive line will get better as the Bulldogs get deeper into the season -- just like last season when the Georgia started three freshmen for all but the first two games of the season.
