Signs offer reminders that doo-doo is a no-no

Q: What's foul, filthy and impossible to get off your shoe if you step in it?

A: Dog doo-doo.

But to avoid finding these little unwelcome pet presents in the yard, Augusta resident Bob Dunaway has devised a simple, polite way for homeowners to request that pet owners keep their pooch off of their property.

The result, Dog Gone Lawn & Garden Signs, provides customers with residential and commercial signs that remind pet owners the waste can spread bacteria and ask that they not allow their pet to use the lawn as a bathroom.

The signs can prevent confrontation between homeowner and pet owner, he said. According to Mr. Dunaway, clients have told him it's easier to simply stake a sign on their lawn rather than confront every potential poop offender.

And it isn't just a matter of offending the sensibilities. Pet waste can pose health hazards, particularly in apartment complexes and parks where children might play.

Mr. Dunaway said he's been contacted from folks as far away as California and Wisconsin, but also has found local interest among those who'd like to keep their property poop-free.

"It lets the dog owner know that the homeowner would appreciate them restraining the dog," he said.
