Knights show off balance

Evans coach Marty Jackson had a hard time this summer coming up with the name of who would be his best player this fall.

"I've got a lot of guys who should do good things," Jackson said in August. "There's not just one guy. We will have a bunch."

His Knights (4-0) are backing up that statement. Senior nose guard Trey Golston (6-foot-0, 250) had an impressive 11 solo tackles in the overtime win at Effingham County last week.

Senior Trey Henderson, Jr. (5-10, 185) caught two touchdowns and ran for another that night. He also picked off a pass. Junior Brandon McCladdie (6-1,170) is tied for the area lead with four interceptions.

Senior quarterback Kevin Millward has thrown for 670 yards and nine touchdowns. The two-time All-State punter remains the class of the area in that realm with a 40.3 average per punt.

AREA'S TOP FRESHMAN: That honor should go to Washington-Wilkes Tiger Eric Scott.

It's hard to believe a kid who won't graduate until 2011 has ran for 734 yards on 64 carries. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Scott is averaging 11.6 yards per carry and has scored six touchdowns.

That is a new school record for a freshman. Tigers coach Russell Morgan points out Scott has 20 more yards on seven less fewer carries than the pace Tiger alum Kelmetrus Wylie had last season while leading the area in rushing.

ON A TEAR: Glenn Hills junior defensive end Jerrico Brown had 10 sacks in each of his first two seasons. He was named to the Georgia Sportswriters Association Class AAA team last year.

He's way ahead of that pace this year with eight sacks in four games. Brown (6-1, 250) now has 28 career sacks in 24 games.

TAKEAWAYS: A key to Cross Creek's surge has been senior free safety Emory Wilson. The former quarterback has blossomed on defense this year. Wilson has four interceptions.

Senior cornerback Eric Eitson has three interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown.

BIG THINGS: Laney alumnus Calvin Britt is averaging 36 yards per catch at Division II Tusculum University this fall.

The true freshman caught six passes for 196 yards last week in a 31-28 win against previously unbeaten Wingate. Britt hauled in touchdown catches of 57 and 44 yards. He has eight catches for 284 yards and three scores so far this year.
