Official is charged in domestic disturbance
Deputy says authority member Brown ignored warning

Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority member Keith Brown was arrested earlier this week after failing to heed a deputy's order to stop stalking his estranged wife, according to a sheriff's office report.

Mr. Brown, who jail records say lives in the 200 block of Duncan Road in Clearwater, was charged with interference with a sheriff's deputy around midnight Tuesday after having been warned earlier that night to leave Sabrina Brown's residence and not return, according to the report.

Mrs. Brown called officers about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to complain that Mr. Brown was constantly riding by and harassing her with phone calls. A deputy responded and stopped Mr. Brown and told him to leave and not come back. Mr. Brown left, but after the deputy left, Mr. Brown returned about 30 minutes later. Mrs. Brown called the sheriff's department again, but when the deputy arrived, Mr. Brown had already left. Then around midnight, Mr. Brown returned again and was arrested and taken to jail, according to the report.

His $285 bond was paid at 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, according to jail records. He is scheduled to appear in Richmond County Civil and Magistrate Court on Oct. 30.

When asked for a comment Thursday, Mr. Brown said the Richmond County residence was his, not his wife's, and he did not want to discuss the incident.

In May 2006, Augusta commissioners appointed Mr. Brown to the District 4 seat on the City Commission until a special election could be held to fill the term of Commissioner Richard Colclough, who had resigned.

Mr. Brown had qualified to run for the seat, but his residency was challenged by District 4 resident Alvin Mason, and the Richmond County Board of Elections agreed unanimously Mr. Brown was not qualified to run for the seat because he did not meet the two-year state residency requirement.

Augusta commissioners are required to live in the district they are elected to represent, and coliseum authority members must live in Richmond County.
