Lisa Jerett has been a part of the Greater Augusta Horse Show benefit for many years.

"I've been showing (horses) since I was 12," said Ms. Jerett, 34, who brought several children from Hidden Forest Equestrian Center to the show at the Hippodrome Horse Complex in North Augusta on Sept. 24.

The horse show, in its 24th year, has been a benefit for Camp Rainbow for 12 years. The summer camp, for children with cancer, is sponsored through the Medical College of Georgia Children's Medical Center.

"It's a fun show to bring kids to," Ms. Jerett said.

The show is nonsanctioned, and organizers said they like it that way because it allows for more categories of riders.

"It's the biggest and best backyard horse show principally for children," said Woody Merry, who has been the chairman of the show from the start.

Since the first event, on Oct. 17, 1981, at the Columbia County Fairgrounds, the show has raised more than $240,000 for charities such as the Sunshine Foundation, St. Joseph Hospital and Camp Rainbow.

The event featured riders from Georgia and South Carolina competing in 40 English and Western classes.

Organizers said the show raised about $10,000 for Camp Rainbow.

About 100 children attend the camp each year. It is free to young cancer patients who are being treated at the Children's Medical Center, said Henriette Malzer, the special events coordinator for the center. "It's a wonderful camp for kids," she said.

Ms. Malzer said it was fitting that a fundraiser for the camp for sick children involved other children.

"Kids can help other kids," she said.
