Sports keep North Augusta High senior on the move

Weekdays are long for Summer Harris. After school, the North Augusta High School senior has a couple of hours devoted to volleyball, either through practice or a game; then it's time for cheerleading practice.

"She's one of those kids you don't know how she does it all," said Chris Emerling, North Augusta's volleyball coach.

One of the best things Harris brings to the volleyball team is her attitude, he said.

Emerling has had Harris and teammate Mallory Whelchel share playing time this season.

"They've never complained," he said. "They've served as examples for the team."

Harris started playing volleyball as an eighth-grader.

"I just like the game," said the athlete, who also is a co-captain of the Yellow Jackets' cheerleading squad. "I like really intense games. I like hitting. I'm a strong hitter."

Her quickness is an asset on the volleyball court, Emerling said.

"She really is quick. She gets balls I'm surprised she gets," he said.

As a member of the cheerleading squad, Harris said, her favorite times are out on the football field cheering on the team. During her middle school years, she cheered competitively, but the high school squad is all about school spirit, not competitions, she said.

"It's a lot of fun to cheer for pep rallies too," she said.

After volleyball, she will take a few months off from sports. In the spring, Harris said, her schedule will get hectic again when she competes with the track team.

"I love to run," she said.

Sports aren't the only extracurricular activities keeping her busy.

She's the senior class president and a member of the National Honor Society, student council and Beta Club.

She also is a member of Grace United Methodist Church and participates in a lot of community service through her youth group.

In addition, she has played basketball in church leagues.

Harris said she thinks this will be her last season of volleyball.

"I don't have the height to play in college," said the 5-foot-3-inch senior. "You have to be tall."

She hasn't decided what college she would like to attend but is considering the University of South Carolina, Wofford College in Spartanburg and Newberry College in Newberry.

She said she would like to become an elementary school teacher.
