Roomy home off golf course is decorated lightly, airily

Few people can say they have a golf course for a back yard and a view of the Savannah River from their front yard, but Joyce Wetherington and her husband, North Augusta Police Chief Lee Wetherington, can.

They live in The River Club development in North Augusta. "We moved here in October of last year," said Mrs. Wetherington. "We wanted something with some space."

The three-story, 4,200-square-foot home definitely provides the space.

Three bedrooms and a bathroom occupy the upstairs portion of the home.

A guest bedroom is decorated with numerous pictures of the city of Charleston, S.C., that are color-coordinated with the comforter. Even the patterned comforter is called "Charleston." The walls are painted a soft green that complements the mauve tones of the pictures and the comforter.

"I like this room because it's big and it's decorated the way I wanted to decorate it," Mrs. Wetherington said. The couple also enjoys the Charleston room because it overlooks both the Jessye Norman Amphitheater and the river.

The upstairs bathroom is known to the Wetheringtons as the "blue bathroom." They used a light-blue color for the walls to open up the room for space. Various pictures and accessories with ocean themes hang on the walls and stand along the sink.

"Everything (in here) is Martha Stewart," said Mrs. Wetherington. "That may not be a very good thing these days, though."

Mrs. Wetherington's favorite room is the kitchen, which is on the main level. She decided to coordinate the great room and the kitchen because they are open to one another.

"I can stand here (in the kitchen) and when my family's visiting and they're in the great room watching TV, I can see the TV and visit with them," Mrs. Wetherington said. "I can stand here and I can see three different views of the golf course."

The kitchen walls are painted a terra-cotta color. A white table set adds a light feel to the area. Along with pewter bar chairs to match the cabinet knobs, Mrs. Wetherington displays porcelain and wicker chickens along the cabinet tops. Countertops are a light beige porcelain-tile design also used for the kitchen floor.

"We really didn't want Corian because it scratches and we didn't want granite because it's too expensive," said Chief Wetherington. His wife said that she thought the countertops and the floor blended nicely with the wall colors.

A "sports den" was a must for Chief Wetherington, so his wife left the decorating of the first-level room up to him. With his affinity for golf and hunting, it was easy for Chief Wetherington to decide what he wanted for the room.

"We left it unfinished and then I finished it," he said.

White wicker furniture offsets the hunter-green color of the carpet. A mounted deer hangs over a fireplace and guns are lined up over the entertainment center on racks that look like branches of a tree.

"I was looking for something different," Chief Wetherington said. "I thought, 'I really want something that looks more rustic."'

With two porches overlooking the back yard, one upstairs and one downstairs, the couple can enjoy the golf-course view. But sometimes that can be risky.

"I've got 5-gallon buckets full of golf balls," said Chief Wetherington. "They'll hit the house but no one's broken a window yet."

To complete the golf-course view, the couple put a sign in their back yard that reads, "No hookers by order of the police chief."

"We put that up and we get a lot of laughs out of it," Chief Wetherington said.

The Wetheringtons agree that it's best to take time to finish a home.

"I think that's what's important about decorating a house to me is don't be in a rush to do anything," Chief Wetherington said. "Live in it a little while before you decorate it. That's what we've done."

THE FAMILY: Lee and Joyce Wetherington and the couple's Jack Russell terrier, Cayce

THE HOME: Stucco, three-story house in The River Club, North Augusta

THE BASICS: 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, 4,200 square feet

IT'S A FACT: The Wetheringtons have a view of River Club's golf course and the Savannah River
