At the Arts in the Heart of Augusta festival, we asked kids ages 3 to 12 to draw their family. We gave them markers and a piece of paper and let them have at it.

We got stick figure families, families with lots of people, families with just two people. We got pets, and trees, and lots and lots of suns. A few included their house and many added the sky, birds and grass.

Some families were smiling - some were missing facial features altogether.

Some labled every person so we'd know who each was. One thing that was consistent in almost every drawing, the kids had the sizes right - the parents were larger than the kids.

From all the drawing we picked the best. We looked at the child's age, how they used color and space, and how detailed and artistic the drawing was. It was tough.

The winner was Simons McGlone, 11, of Augusta. His drawing is on the cover. Here you'll find the runners-up.

See, there are some very talented young artists among us.
