JOHNSTON, S.C. - South Carolina offered Strom Thurmond's Aramis Hillary a scholarship earlier this week because coach Steve Spurrier wants a dual-threat, mobile quarterback in the Gamecocks program.

Hillary now has a new highlight reel to send to Columbia, one that will show Spurrier that he's getting what he wants.

Hillary rushed for a game-high 119 yards and led the Rebels on the game-winning touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter of a 14-7 victory over Silver Bluff on Friday night.

"Oh, I'm definitely going to send this one to (Spurrier)," said Hillary after the game, having already slapped a garnet South Carolina visor over his brow.

When Hillary wasn't dicing through the Bulldogs, he was handing the ball off to bruiser Oquendo Curry, who added 113 yards and both Strom Thurmond touchdowns.

Curry's 23-yard run with 5:12 to play was the winning score and snapped the Rebels' two-game losing streak.

"We had attitude. It was all about attitude," said Hillary, who committed to South Carolina this week over Mississippi State. "We had lost two tough games and beat ourselves in a couple. We picked ourselves up tonight."

Hillary was relieved of some pressure, following his announcement.

"A lot of people and teammates were asking me if it would tense me up, but I think it calmed me down more than anything," said Hillary, who went 6-for-12 passing for 66 yards. "I don't have to think about where I'm going anymore. I'm committed."

Strom Thurmond (2-3) used a second-quarter goal-line stand, stopping Silver Bluff twice from the 1-yard line, to keep from going down 7-0.

Still, Silver Bluff (3-2), undermanned and undersized, played its usual scrappy style. The Bulldogs had several impressive drives, including an eight-play, 60-yard scoring drive in the fourth.

Workhorse Kendrick Garnett (81 yards) scored from 3 yards out with 6:25 left to tie it, 7-7, but the boys from The Bluff mustered only one first down on their final possession.

"We played as hard and as good as we can play, and (Strom Thurmond) had seven more points. That's all I can say," Silver Bluff coach Al Lown said. "You could see the physical match-ups out there. We shouldn't have even been in the game, but we were."

Strom Thurmond, which opens defense of its region championship next week against Chapin, essentially ran the same shotgun option read play all night. Hillary either handed the ball to Curry, who averaged 9.4 yards per carry, or kept it himself.

Hillary and Curry were the only Strom Thurmond players to touch the ball on its second-quarter scoring drive, capped by Curry's 21-yard run.

Nearly all of the Rebels' yards came between the tackles. Strom Thurmond rushed for 302 yards on 44 running plays.

The Bulldogs predominantly rode the Garnett brothers, Kendrick and Frederick, who combined for 117 yards. Quarterback Freddie Blanchard was 7-for-15 passing for 62 yards with an interception.

Silver Bluff used a 14-play, 45-yard drive to end the first quarter but were stonewalled twice at the 1-yard line.

Strom Thurmond's interior defensive line stopped Blanchard on a sneak attempt and Frederick Garnett on an off-tackle play on third and fourth downs, respectively, for the goal-line stand.

"It was tough for us in short-yardage situations, with the size of our backs and our line," Lown said. "We didn't punch it in there, and that hurt us."

The Rebels missed two field goals in the first half but still led 7-0 at the half thanks to a quick drive late in the second quarter. Hillary ran for 19 yards on a second-and-25 play, and Curry followed with a 21-yard run up the middle for the score.

Strom Thurmond outrushed Silver Bluff 172-75 in the first half.
