Francisco Cruz is grateful for volunteer assistance.
"It's always great to have organizations volunteer," said Mr. Cruz, the manager of Fort Gordon's Fisher House.
On Sept. 9, a dozen members of an Advanced Noncommissioned Officers' Course spent the morning cleaning the house, washing windows, dusting chandeliers and bookcases, and cleaning bathrooms and the kitchen.
"We don't have a full cleaning crew; we have to rely on organizations like ANCOC and other groups," Mr. Cruz said.
Over the next few months, several volunteer groups will work with the Fisher House, which provides lodging for families of service members receiving treatment at local hospitals such as Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers.
Families of service members injured or wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan stay at the home free.
The Fisher House has an annual operating budget of about $100,000. Private donations are an important source of funding.
"It's a good organization that reaches out to the VA and family members. I support it through the CFC (Combined Federal Campaign)," said Sgt. 1st Class Kawana Carswell, a member of the noncommissioned officers course, who volunteered Sept. 9.
Volunteers include Youth Challenge Academy cadets, who will prepare a meal for residents in October; members of T-Time, a chapel ministry for teens, who will paint an outdoor shed in October; and a Veterans of Foreign Wars post that will bring a financial donation in early November.
People in Greenville, S.C., also are showing their support. Wind, Women and Wheels, a women's motorcycle club, will sponsor a Fisher House benefit from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Big Chill in Greenville.
There will be a bike rodeo, games, food and a specialty bike show at the event. For more information, call (864) 303-0635.
Mr. Cruz said people interested in volunteering at the house can call him at (706) 787-7100.
