Fuller steals the showdown in focus

WHO'S HOT

South Aiken quarterback Calvin Fuller. Fuller has out-Coco'd Strom Thurmond's electric playmaker Coco Hillary with his feet at the quarterback position in recent weeks. Fuller has run for 328 yards and rung up seven Thoroughbreds touchdowns (five rushing, two passing) over the past two games. He's averaging 10.9 yards per carry in that span.

WHO'S NOT

Evans. The 0-4 Knights are always on the verge of a tepid boil. The combined record of their opponents is 14-5, and they've been competitive in losing three of those four games by seven points. They travel to face 0-4 Jones County this week. The Greyounds have lost by 35, 63, 24 and 28 points. Translation: Take the Knights and the points.

HARDEST TEAMS TO FIGURE OUT

Ridge Spring-Monetta and Wagener-Salley. Ridge Spring (2-2) has 20 starters back. Wagener-Salley (0-4) lost talented senior Channing Schofield to Wake Forest but still has Georgia commitment Ronnie Tyler. Tyler doesn't have much of a supporting cast around him and hasn't had the chance to make a lot of plays.

THREE BEST WINS LAST WEEK

1. South Aiken 35, Strom Thurmond 21: The Thoroughbreds controlled the top team in Class AAA. Again. If they can only play like that against Aiken. South Aiken hasn't beaten the Hornets since a 13-0 win in 1993.

2. Jefferson County 35, Hephzibah 6: The Warriors might want to invest in some more fireworks. The traditional game-ending barrage came out again after their record fifth consecutive win to begin a season. They are a bona fide Region 3-AAA South championship contender.

3. Greenbrier 16, Evans 9: What a difference the past two weeks have been. First Lincoln County, then the Wolfpack knocked off a country rival, went 1-0 in the region and evened their season record all in one night.

THIS WEEK'S THREE BIG GAMES

1. Silver Bluff (3-1) at Strom Thurmond (3-1): The Rebels try to recover from their first loss.

2. Morgan County (5-0) at Laney (4-1): Two teams that appear playoff bound. The Wildcats must win to stay in the driver's seat for a repeat region title.

3. Greenwood (4-0) at Aiken (3-1): Aiken gets another tough test before region play.

CHECK THE DICTIONARY

Luther Welsh introduced a new phrase earlier this month. "We're quick as 'P-turkey' on defense this year," Welsh said.

When asked for a clarification, the legendary coach replied: "Oh, P-turkey? It means we have pretty good speed like turkeys."

FLEET FEET FOR A FINE FEAT

Glascock County had three players make quite an impact in Friday's loss to Georgia Military. Dontavious Gibson had 22 attempts for 159 yards. Antuan Harris had 12 carries for 158 yards. Randy Johnson had 12 carries for 152 yards.

CIGARETTE KEEPS SMOKING

Laney senior wingback KenĪneth "Cigarette" Walker continues to score like no other player in the area. Walker had two TD runs and a 93-yard interception return last week at Monticello. He now has 11 touchdowns through five games.

This week's list

These are the area teams with the best size, as reported by coaches who submitted size information over the summer. The teams are ranked by the number of players on the varsity roster who weigh more than 220 pounds.

Team 220-pounders

1. Jefferson County 31

2. Evans 20

T-3. Midland Valley 17

T-3. North Augusta 17

5. Warren County 15
