One look at the scoreboard beyond the left field fence at Greenbrier's softball field told the tale of what happened Tuesday night.
The 10-0 score after 4 innings didn't fully explain the Lady Wolfpack win. But the two additional dents did.
"We're going to have to do something about it," Greenbrier softball coach Garrett Black said as he looked up at the dozen or so dents on the scoreboard. "We've got to put a net up or something. We're starting to wear it out, especially in practice."
Greenbrier picked up a region win over rival Lakeside, and the battered scoreboard picked up two new dents. They both came because of home runs by Ashlyn Masters and Chelcy Stanley that hit the big board and nearly took out a few of the light bulbs that indicate the inning.
They certainly weren't the first home runs hit at home by Greenbrier, ranked No. 2 in Class AAAA, and they most likely won't be the last.
"There's a lot of dents up there from over the years," senior Sara Oland said. "Coach Black has been talking about getting a new scoreboard. Hopefully he'll put up a net."
The most recent damage inflicted on the scoreboard produced only a portion of the 10-0 shutout.
The offensive action began early when Greenbrier's first two batters reached base safely. Sophomore starters Masters and Kaila Hunt drove in runs on back-to-back triples. Masters scored later in the inning on an error.
The 4-0 lead after the first inning set the tone for the rest of the game. Black said it may have been a completely different contest had Lakeside capitalized in the top of the first.
The Lady Panthers put runners at the corners with two outs but left them stranded.
Masters' two-run home run in the second inning added to the lead, and Stanley made it 7-0 with her home run to lead off the third. A pair of wild pitches and an RBI double from pinch hitter Kaitlyn Vest put the game into mercy-rule territory.
"I just think we couldn't put anything together. I don't think we got down at any point," Lakeside coach Christine Gisler said. "We had hits. We just didn't have them when we needed them."
Greenbrier's senior starter Kassie Bailey (9-0) gave up four hits in four innings of work to stay perfect on the year.
Greenbrier (17-1), which posted its 10th shutout of the year, now sits atop the Region 3B-AAAA standings as the only undefeated team in region play.
