WHO'S HOT: Cross Creek. The Razorbacks are 3-0 for the first time in history. Time will tell if they are for real or if they are just a pig of a team dressed up in princely fashions.

The combined record of the teams they have faced is 2-7.

WHO'S HAPPY: Glenn Hills. The Spartans are 3-0 for the first time since 1983, when they opened with a 13-0 streak. They also started 7-0 in 1978.

The fact the program has had 11 seasons where it did not win three games since 1987 puts the current standing in the proper light.

BEST WIN LAST WEEK: South Aiken 18, Strom Thurmond 16. South Aiken has had trouble moving the ball and kicking extra points this year. So any time it can score two touchdowns in the final 1:40 to beat a good team, that's an accomplishment.

BEST NON-RESULT: Laney 8, Baldwin 7: The scoreboard said there was 10:41 left in the second quarter when lightning stopped play, but the Braves had shown it was a matter of time before they started rolling.

Baldwin (2-0) ran 17 plays to just six for the Wildcats. The yardstick read 111 total yards for the visitors to 46 for the Wildcats. Baldwin's leading rusher already had 95 yards on the ground.

It's no stretch to say the lightning halted a likely loss and preserved their unbeaten season.

It's a source of Laney pride instead. The bragging rights from saying they led one of the state's top Class AAAA teams should stay with the Wildcats all season.

1. Greenbrier (2-1) at Evans (3-0): The Knights are no doubt still fuming over the way Greenbrier stole a last-second win from them last season.

An Evans win in convincing fashion could lead to the team's first 5-0 start since perfect regular seasons in 1986 and 1987.

2. Silver Bluff (2-1) at Strom Thurmond (1-3): If Silver Bluff wins with a late rally, then the Rebels are cursed this year.

FINAL WORD: Thomson defensive coordinator John Barnett's perspective offers a lot of hope to Jefferson County fans this fall.

"It's real tough to defend a spread football team when a team can run the ball like Jefferson County can," he said. "They will give people a lot of fits this year. It is like that West Virginia offense. It's tough to get people all lined up to make sure you don't get outnumbered against them."

The Warriors tied Thomson 7-7 in a game that was halted with 4:47 to play in the third quarter.

All the momentum and yardage totals seemed to lend credence to the fact the victory was right there for Jefferson County.

The Warriors missed two field goals. Thomson lost two fumbles.

"Everybody could speculate as to how it would all play out," Barnett said. "These were two good teams that got after each other. Neither team got what they wanted, but both teams found some things they can build off of and improve on."
