NEW ELLENTON - Mark Key doesn't know any New York firefighters, but when the World Trade Center towers collapsed, he lost brothers and sisters.
''Firefighters are family,'' said Chief Key, of New Ellenton's Fire and Rescue Department. ''It's an empty feeling.''
On Friday, the New Ellenton fire and rescue department recognized the firefighters and rescue workers who perished in the catastrophe.
The department extended a 75-foot ladder from atop one of its trucks at Pine Hill Avenue and Main Street.
Hanging halfway up was a red, white and blue flag. Black cloth was draped across the front of the red truck.
Chief Key wore a black stripe across his badge as a symbol of mourning.
As he watched events unfold on television, Chief Key said his thoughts were on how many firefighters must have responded.
''They were doing what they were trained to do,'' Chief Key said. ''In the back of your mind you know the dangers, but you've got to do your job.''
Chief Key said his department is raising money to contribute to a New York firefighter relief fund.Anyone interested in contributing may call (803) 652-2214.
