Boshears air show postponed
FAA, military suggest organizers delay event because of air space concerns after attacks
The annual air show at Daniel Field scheduled for next week will be postponed, organizers announced Thursday.
''The events of the last few days beginning with the attacks this past Tuesday morning on both the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., has left our country in a degree of turmoil,'' said Ed Johnson, the chairman of the Boshears Skyfest 2001.
''Due to these uncontrollable circumstances the (Federal Aviation Administration) and the United States military has suggested that we reschedule our program to a later unknown date.''
Mr. Johnson said FAA officials could not give organizers any indication whether the agency would be able to approve the show next week.
The FAA reopened the nation's air space to commercial traffic Thursday, but general aviation planes, such as the type that were scheduled to perform next week, remained grounded. It was unclear when those planes would receive permission to fly again.
Organizers, who have been working on pulling the show together since last year, said they would like to reschedule the event at some point in the future.
''It will go on - as to when is what is in question at this moment.'' said the show's spokeswoman, Elizabeth Norris. ''What we're working with is, of course, what we can do realistically in light of the situation the United States is in and what opportunities it leaves us with.''
The air show was scheduled to start next Thursday, with display aircraft, aerial acts, parachute teams and carnival rides each day until Sept. 23. This year's event was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Persian Gulf War.
Mr. Johnson said members of the air show's committee and board of directors would meet in two weeks to discuss new plans and whether to keep the theme the same.
Last year, the show drew between 10,000 and 20,000 spectators a day. The event has an annual budget of $150,000.
Those with tickets can receive refunds at the Augusta Aviation office at Daniel Field.
