Americans urged by lawmakers to fly Old Glory

WASHINGTON -- U.S. citizens are being urged by lawmakers to fly the American flag outside their homes and businesses as a response to the terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

A resolution passed unanimously Thursday by the House and Senate requested the mass display of Old Glory for the next 30 days.

''You will be sending a strong signal to millions of people here at home and abroad that the red, white and blue represents freedom and democracy, and those ideals will live on,'' said House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Mo., said the symbolic action would demonstrate to the world that ''we will not be daunted.''
