Knight should have been fired long ago, but the university so overvalued his coaching results that it excused his abusive behavior. In May, he was given an ultimatum - one more incident and he'd be out. He should have been out then, but it was only a matter of time.
Last week Knight grabbed a student by the arm and gave him a stern lecture about manners and respect. The student's offense? He said, ``Hey Knight, what's up?''
Now maybe the student wasn't as respectful of this demigod as he should have been. But it doesn't take much to set off the time bomb that is Bobby Knight. And grabbing a student for such a minor thing as a ``Whassup'' comment is inexcusable, especially after the long record of chair-throwing, cursing and physical abuse. Knight's just not one to talk about manners. It's ludicrous, in fact.
What is even more absurd is that, even though he has been fired, Knight still gets to collect on the last two years of his contract. What a joke.
Hoosiers have been upset by the decision, but they need to get a grip. Knight has done nothing but badmouth the school lately, has had hissy fits and has been a no-show at several key university functions. It was almost as if he was daring the university to fire him. In fact, he was fishing in Canada when the announcement of his termination was made.
They let him act like an animal for years, then had to take him out kicking and screaming. Thank goodness Indiana finally took a stand for common decency.
