School superintendent overpaid

Editor, The Chronicle

Do Aiken residents realize that the superintendent of Aiken County Schools makes $126,347 per year with an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students? This salary is more than the governor makes ($106,000) and the state superintendent of education ($92,007).

Compare Aiken figures with the superintendent of Greenville, who makes only $122,850 with an enrollment of approximately 57,000.

Do folks know that every elected school board member rubber-stamped this decision and voted for it? That board also gave administration an 11.3 percent increase in pay compared to the teachers who only got 5.1 percent and principals only received 2.9 percent.

Do Aiken property owners realize that the 4.7 mill increase for property taxes, which include automobile property, was passed by the school board? In 1998 the Aiken Legislative Delegation gave the school board that privilege of raising property taxes and they intend to make their expensive wish list come true whether our children need it or not.

May I suggest it is time for a revolution in Aiken? Let's elect new school board members who take care of our money, help our teachers and deliver education to the children, not fluff.

Davis Cheek, Aiken
