Ramblin Rhodes: Budding country artist Durrance is growing in stature

Great things are happening for country artist Eric Durrance, including his second single, a new CD and a 20-city tour.

He is opening for Lady Antebellum (Hillary Scott and Augustans Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood) and another Georgian, Jason Aldean, and he is promoting both his new CD, Angels Fly Away, and his new novelty single, Turn It Off .

The CD is being initially released only digitally, beginning Tuesday, on amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, cdbaby.com, itunes.com, rhapsody.com, walmart.com and napster.com.

His cleverly worded, up-tempo single, Turn It Off , is about a guy who wants his girl to turn off all of her many technology resources (YouTube, MySpace, iPhone, HD-TV, etc.) and turn it on with him. The hook line is, "You better lose that connection before my affection is gone."

"We're shooting the video for my single in three weeks in north Florida around Tallahassee near where I live," Mr. Durrance said in a call last week. "Kids really love this song."

This is a great album with many potential hits.

My favorites include three songs that Mr. Durrance co-wrote, Someone I Can't Live Without, Sometimes Life Is Hard and Wait Till I Get There; and also What If (It's That One Day) , This Side of Sober and (Baby I'm Your) Cover .

You can hear many of the songs on Mr. Durrance's Web site, ericdurrance.com.

Mr. Durrance was in Augusta in May for the A Day in the Country festival, where he was joined by Teddy Gentry, of the band Alabama. Mr. Gentry was a co-producer for the Angels Fly Away CD.

The tour kicks off at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C., on Oct. 8 and continues through Nov. 22. Stops include Oct. 24 in the Johnny Mercer Theatre in Savannah, Ga.; Oct. 25 in Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson, S.C.; and Oct. 26 in the Columbus (Ga.) Civic Center.

"I can't believe that I got on this great tour with so many other artists in line wanting to be on it," Mr. Durrance said. "We're praying this is going to give us the edge to get to the next step of recognition.

"I did a show with Lady Antebellum recently, just playing my guitar like I did in Augusta, and they were really nice to me. They even did a shout-out to me from the stage during their show."

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE: For those of you who loved James Brown like I did, you are invited to attend the wine and cheese reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Augusta Museum of History, Sixth at Reynolds streets, where I'm autographing copies of my new book, Say It Loud! My Memories of James Brown, Soul Brother No. 1.
