In the hours following terrorist bombings in Washington and New York City, Augusta officials were hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.
At a closed-door meeting held this afternoon and called by Mayor Bob Young, representatives from the city's various public safety offices - including the Emergency Management Agency, the sheriff's department, the fire department, the marshal's office, Rural/Metro ambulance and several Augusta commissioners - reviewed emergency action plans that the city is employing as a precautionary measure.
The meeting was closed to the public and the media ''for the safety of the public,'' Mr. Young said.
