Man arrested after chase, crash

An Augusta man was being held in the Richmond County jail Monday on charges of trying to evade police during a traffic stop last the weekend.

When sheriff's Deputy Antonio Rodriguez tried to pull over Kevin Lee Richmond, 23, of the 2000 block of Crosscreek Drive, about 9:15 p.m. Sunday, the driver drove away, leading police on a chase, according to sheriff's Maj. Richard Weaver.

Mr. Richmond crashed his vehicle when he took a right turn on Howe Street too fast, ran into a stop sign and hit a brick wall, Maj. Weaver said.

Maj. Weaver said the driver then ran away but was caught a short distance away by police. He was not injured.

Mr. Richmond is charged with hit-and run, driving with no insurance, driving with a suspended license, an improper right turn, running a stop sign and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Maj. Weaver said Mr. Richmond also had two outstanding warrants - one for criminal trespass and one for false imprisonment.

He is being held on bonds totaling more than $5,000, jail officials said.

Burn victim thanks rescuers on TV

Members of Rural/Metro Ambulance and the Burn Unit at Doctors Hospital will appear on an episode of the Jenny Jones Show at 8 a.m. today on television station WFXG (Channel 54).

Paramedics Debbie Murrell and Lisa Smith and burn specialist Dr. Joseph Still from Doctors Hospital received a public thank you from burn victim James ''Jim'' Hipp on the show taped Aug. 15 called ''Medical Miracles.''

Mr. Hipp, a former contractor from Akron, Ohio, was injured while painting a transformer at Thermal Ceramics on Nov. 5, 1998, said Rural/Metro Ambulance public information officer Valerie Spratlin.

Mr. Hipp fell onto the transformer and was struck with 15,000 volts, Mrs. Spratlin said. His ribs, eyelids, lips, nose and ears were burned during the accident, she said.

Ms. Murrell and Mrs. Smith transported Mr. Hipp to Doctors Hospital. Mrs. Spratlin said doctors at the hospital gave Mr. Hipp a 3 percent chance of survival.

Dr. Still used skin from other parts of Mr. Hipp's body to reconstruct the damaged areas, Ms. Spratlin said.

According to Ms. Murrell, the paramedics and the doctor surprised Mr. Hipp, who had told the show's producers he wanted to thank the trio personally.

Man arrested on drug charges

TENNILLE - Drug agents in Washington County found bags of crack cocaine spread across a kitchen counter during a raid and charged a Tennille man with trafficking cocaine, Washington County Sheriff Thomas Smith said Monday.

Demetrius Lewis, 23, was arrested after officers used a search warrant Friday at a residence on Williams Road and found 31 bags of the drug weighing more than an ounce, Sheriff Smith said.

The raid was a joint effort by the sheriff's office's crime suppression unit, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Ocmulgee Drug Task Force. It came after months of complaints from area residents about loud music and constant traffic at the house.

The search warrant was obtained after a confidential informant provided information, Sheriff Smith said. Mr. Lewis remained in the Washington County jail without bond Monday.

Cousin arrested after shooting

WRENS - A man was being held in the Jefferson County jail Monday on $100,000 bond in connection with the shooting of his cousin during an argument two weeks ago.

Tarquinius Farmer, 21, of Marietta, Ga., surrendered to police Sunday morning, said Wrens Police Chief David Hannah.

Mr. Farmer was wanted in the shooting of Tommy Farmer, 25, of Avera, Ga., during an argument Aug. 26 at Pine Valley Apartments on King Mills Road, Chief Hannah said.

The dispute was over a cell phone and $1,200 that had been taken from the suspect while on a trip to Atlanta with his cousin and four other men, according to Chief Hannah.

The victim was shot once in the arm and abdomen. He was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital and released last week but returned to the hospital this week complaining of stomach problems, the chief said.

Another suspect, Tasheka Strowbridge, who reportedly was in the suspect's car when the shooting occurred, surrendered Wednesday, Chief Hannah said. She was released the same day on a $10,000 bond, jail officials said.
