The Chronicle welcomes you online! Please feel free to respond to these editorials or letters to the editor by sending your letters to the editor.

We condense letters; most, as published, won't exceed 300 words. A letter must include the writer's name and city, which will be published, and an address and telephone number for verification, which will not be published. Writers may be limited to one letter every 30 days. Open letters, letters to third parties and poetry are not considered. Letters from people living outside the Chronicle's circulation area usually are not considered.

ACLU protects the press, too

Editor, The Chronicle

Most of the time the majority does not approve of the actions taken by the American Civil Liberties Union, and that is as it should be. The ACLU was not created to please the majority. It was created to protect the constitutional rights of minorities and individuals.

The ACLU is unwelcome until you, a relative or a friend are mistreated for being a whistle blower or are being sexually harassed on the job. You want the ACLU to be by your side when you are being discriminated against because of your sex, race or religion.

For more than 80 years the ACLU has been the first line of defense between you and those who would strip you of your constitutional rights. They will do much more to protect you than the gun-toting militia target practicing in the hills.

The ACLU does more than any other organization to protect this country from the clutches of any one religion, as is commonly accepted in some Middle Eastern countries. Freedom of religion is one of the reasons many people came here.

This newspaper and all papers throughout this land should be staunch supporters of the ACLU, for there is no greater defender of freedom of the press.

And it is freedom of the press that keeps this country alive and vibrant.

Hoyt Goodson, Waynesboro
