Staff Photographer Jonathan Ernst has worked for The Augusta Chronicle since November, 1997. He has covered a wide range of events for the newspaper, from the World Series and the impeachment trial of President Clinton to high school sports and the Salley Chitlin Strut.
Mr. Ernst began work on the Tubman project in the summer of 1999, after a brief writing assignment for the ''Celebrate 2000'' history series acquainted him with the Augusta/Liberia connection. His two years of research included work in a dozen or more libraries across four states, nearly a month in Liberia in March 2000, and hours of interviews with the Tubman family.
Mr. Ernst grew up in Baltimore and suburban Atlanta and earned his degree in English from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. He is currently taking a leave of absence from the Chronicle to participate in a Pew Fellowship in International Journalism at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. As a part of that program, he will be traveling to Colombia in October to report on America's involvement in the war on drugs for the Chronicle.
He can be reached via E-mail at: jernst@augustachronicle.com.
