Expectations grow for young Jags

In his seventh year as Augusta State's men's golf coach, Josh Gregory said he feels like he has a fresh start this season.

The Jaguars are looking to build on last season's late success, which included a trip to the NCAA Championships. Augusta State will rely on youth as it sends three underclassmen to the Scenic City Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Monday and Tuesday.

Seven of the 11 players on the team are underclassmen. Gregory's OK with that.

"I finally feel really good and really comfortable with these 11 guys," Gregory said. "It's a little bit bigger team than I'd like, but they're all kids I recruited. They don't have any baggage. I don't have any bad apples.

"They're all very good players. I don't have many superstars, but hopefully they'll emerge throughout the year."

One of those could be freshman Taylor Floyd, who won team qualifying with five rounds in the 60s. He said he's "average length" off the tee, but his strength is iron play.

"I've been striking it really well," Floyd said. "It's pretty easy to do everything else when you're hitting all the greens."

Sophomore Henrik Norlander is a returning third-team All-American. He led the Jaguars last year with a 72.39 stroke average and four top-five finishes, including a pair of victories.

"When I first came in I didn't know what college was," Norlander said. "I think expectations are higher now with the way we finished last year."

Augusta State closed last season with a pair of runner-up showings and a third to qualify for postseason play. In the NCAA East Regional, the Jaguars shot 20-under par and finished second to Georgia to advance to the NCAA Championships. There, the team finished 29th.

"To finish second at the NCAA Regional was special," Gregory said. "I didn't expect that much out of a young team."

Floyd, Norlander, junior Jake Amos, senior Janne Kaske and redshirt freshman Brendan Gillins will represent the first traveling squad. Gregory said most of his roster will get an opportunity to showcase their abilities in the four fall tournaments.

"A lot of people are going to get to play early on," Gregory said, "which should help me determine things a little earlier on. Last year, we were making lineup changes right before the NCAA Regional. I don't want that to happen again."

One notable change to the team's schedule is the return of the Administaff ASU Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club after three years at Champions Retreat Golf Club.
