Golf invention lands top prize

David Jones went to bed early Wednesday morning in his hotel room in Orlando, Fla., but he couldn't sleep.

After winning the inaugural Fore Inventors Only reality show on The Golf Channel late Tuesday night, the Martinez resident couldn't get it off his mind.

"It's an American dream come true," a weary Jones said Wednesday afternoon via cell phone. He planned to return to his job as a warehouse manager at 5 this morning.

Of more than 1,000 entrants, Jones and his Club Caddy advanced to the final round of five inventors. After a week of fan voting, Jones won the competition with 30 percent of the popular vote - six percent ahead of the Hill Shot Golf Trainer, a sloped hitting tee invented by Larry Koch and his daughter, Brandi.

Jones invested $40,000 into the Club Caddy, a clip that allows a club - or clubs - to stand upright. He invented the product to save golfers from bending over and having to pick up wet or dirty clubs around the green.

Jones will receive the grand prize, which includes shelf space at Golfsmith stores for one year, a fully-developed infomercial and $50,000 worth of commercial and promotional air time on The Golf Channel.

He said there's no timetable for getting his product up and running, but he plans to have a finalized product ready before Christmas.

"I am interested in moving while the iron is hot," he said. "Once we get them ready to go we think they'll go really fast."

Instead of licensing the Club Caddy to a company and receiving royalty checks, Jones said he and his family want to be in control of the product's development. He said he believes he has the next big thing in golf. Fore Inventors Only viewers backed up his claim.

"The next thing you know every golfer in the world will have more fun playing golf with this oversized, eight-inch clothespin," he said. "I'm extremely grateful. It's been a long, hard road for us. ... I see a brighter future for me and my family."
