MAYOR DEKE: Be the leader you were elected to be. Cut wasteful spending, get an audit of the different departments and concentrate on tightening the city's belt during these hard times. Investigate the purchasing department. If there wasn't a problem there, there wouldn't be a problem with "freedom of information."

A RANT FOR those making illegal U-turns every morning on Washington Road near Interstate 20 in front of Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. Over the past few months, I have witnessed many near misses in this area.

RAVES TO JIMMY Lester and Bill Kulhke for their efforts in securing the massive array of highway improvement projects under way in the Augusta area now.

A HUGE RAVE FOR Sarah, the pharmacist at Rite-Aid on Tobacco Road. She took time to help figure out our prescription insurance problems and saved us money. She did this in spite of a pharmacy full of customers and the phone ringing.

WHY IS IT THAT McDuffie County has no restaurants such as Applebee's, Ruby Tuesday's, California Dreaming, etc.? Does anyone fail to see that it is because of the few people who think they have the right to choose for all of us about wine and such being served in our county?

THE PROFESSIONAL Association of Georgia Educators is pushing for more and more money going to "training educators." If they earned a college degree, they're supposed to be able to teach what they were taught. These people just want more control and more money.

COLUMBIA COUNTY LEADERS can't wait to blow more millions of their taxpayers' money. Now they want to pay $27.9 million for tennis courts and for a natatorium (that's a swimming pool for us uninitiated). Will they ever learn that if there is a legitimate demand for such facilities, private enterprise will step in to make a profit and build them?

RANT TO THE construction going on around Augusta. If you are going to take away an exit, put a sign up warning drivers you are going to do so prior to just taking it away.

WHEN WAS THE last time The Augusta Chronicle truly covered Georgia Southern University sports? UGA isn't the only school around.
