Lowering drinking age is a bad idea
Letter to the Editor
Friday, September 05, 2008

Finally! A college president speaks out against lowering the drinking age to 18. University of Georgia President Michael Adams knows there is a problem with the younger age, but isn't convinced this would be the best solution.

Yes, 18-year-olds can vote, serve our country and drive. But legally drinking at age 18 would more likely increase deaths on the road, cause major damage to property and change the lives of many students forever. Are college presidents really ready to go against the data compiled by groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which certainly have a vested interest in this issue?

I know from my own college experience, when the age was 18, that once you have passed the feel-good mood, you have lost all ability to be responsible, and you aren't thinking about what just one more drink will possibly lead to. Responsible with alcohol at 18? They aren't being responsible at 21 -- which I believe is what the other college presidents believe they will be giving to their 18-and-older students: legal responsibility for their drinking.

Legalizing alcohol for 18-year-olds is setting the students up for a tough road ahead in their lives as college students -- if they make it through four years of college without dying on the road. All you have to do is ask parents who know.
