Mother who saved son from drowning dies
A North Augusta mother who saved her young son's life Friday afternoon at a family swimming pool has died after clinging to life for the past five days.
Doris Martin, of the 600 block of Whitewood Way, died Tuesday at University Hospital, said Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett.
Mrs. Martin jumped in a pool to save her 10-year-old son, who was struggling to stay afloat. After he was safe, she found herself fighting for her life in the pool.
Panel won't condemn Bowles, Brigham
Augusta commissioners decided Tuesday not to condemn statements Commissioners Joe Bowles and Jerry Brigham made during a recent Richmond County Republican Party breakfast.
The board voted unanimously to receive Mr. Bowles' apology and their discussion of an article and tape recording of the breakfast that appeared in the Metropolitan Spirit newspaper and online. Mr. Bowles said he had apologized in a response published in the newspaper last week.
Officials offer reward for anthrax hoax info
Federal and local law enforcement agencies on Tuesday issued a $20,000 reward for information about a 2005 anthrax hoax at Savannah River Site.
The reward was issued to aid the investigation into the identity and location of the person initiating the hoax. Anyone with information can call (706) 722-3702, (706) 541-2782, or (888) 876-5322.
Man faces burglary, rape attempt charges
Deputies have apprehended a man wanted in the rape of a 56-year-old woman last week.
Benjamin Eugene Jenkins, 23, was charged with burglary and criminal attempt of rape early Tuesday, according to Richmond County Sheriff's Office jail records. He is accused of hiding in the victim's home, throwing her to the ground and attempting to remove her pants.
Parent advisory group set to meet Tuesday
The Parent Advisory Committee is sponsoring a meeting for parents of special needs children at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Stolen Indian artifacts found at flea market
Indian artifacts stolen from the Beech Island Historical Society two weeks ago were recovered this weekend at a flea market in Augusta.
According to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, an elderly man purchased the collection Saturday for $500 from two men selling the items at the Old 56 Flea Market.
The unidentified man arranged to turn over the collection to an Aiken County employee.
Herbicide treatments to last until Sept. 15
Herbicide treatments will be under way through Sept. 15 at Thurmond Lake to help control hydrilla around 11 Army Corps of Engineers parks and boat ramps.
Areas being treated are Dordan Creek, Parksville, Clarks Hill Park, Scott's Ferry, Petersburg Campground, Lake Springs, Winfield, Cherokee, Amity, Modoc and Leathersville. The herbicides, which pose no danger to swimmers, boaters or fish, will not be applied around beach areas this year.
Trauma led to death in watercraft accident
Authorities have released the cause of death for a Waynesboro woman who died in a personal watercraft accident during the weekend.
Richmond County Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said Tuesday that Johnna Reid, 46, suffered head trauma and drowned Saturday during an outing with her husband.
TRAFFIC REPORT
- Portions of Broad Street will be closed today and Thursday as crews remove trees. The closures will occur from Fourth Street to East Boundary Road and Third Street to First Street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic will be detoured, and drivers can avoid the area by using Greene Street.
- The demolition of the old Lewiston Road bridge over Interstate 20 will force the closure of portions of the highway near Grovetown. Eastbound lanes at the bridge will close from 9 tonight until 5 a.m. Thursday. Motorists are asked to seek a detour and use caution when approaching the bridge on Lewiston Road.
