Spartans focus on extending reach

The Augusta Spartans indoor football team already is turning attention to its third season next year, when it will defend the inaugural World Indoor Football League championship.

"This is a really important year for us," owner Jimmy Young said. "The first year we just kind of survived, and last year we won the championship. This year our goal is to be profitable. This is the year we really need everyone to get behind us.

"I hate to bring it up, but the third year was the last year for the Stallions (Augusta's previous indoor football team), so we want to have as much support as we can this year."

The Spartans will have some added competition next summer.

The WIFL has brought a fifth team on board, the Tallahassee Titans, and the league is working to add one or two more, Young said.

Current teams in Lakeland, Fla., and Macon are possible expansion teams for the WIFL, Young said.

"I told them to bring 'em all on. We'll whip all of them," Young said.

The Spartans are moving their team office from near the James Brown Arena into Young's business office off Fury's Ferry Road.

The team has been working with a marketing company and former Atlanta Falcon Joe Profit to help increase its reach in the community for the upcoming season.

The team is expected to announce information about tryouts over the course of the next several months, some of which will be held around Georgia and South Carolina.

Also, Young said the team will hold a golf tournament Oct. 1 and a championship ring ceremony later next month.
