Australian Jai Taurima said, ``You can pretty much knock out all the dark athletes (because of the cool conditions expected for the Sydney Olympics). ``We jumped in Salamanca (Spain) a month ago and those guys just couldn't compete well in bad conditions. It was wet and cold.''
Besides, added Taurima, ``Americans are Americans, aren't they? They only jump big in America.''
A furious Lister and Savante compared the comments to John Rocker's infamous remarks to Sports Illustrated. The Aussie was playing mind games, but using the race ignoble and ill-advised.
To discredit Taurima, the Americans must keep their own cool. The smart money says they will. Taurima's best jump is 27 feet, 4Ü inches. Lister, last year's NCAA champ, has jumped 27-10¨, and Stringfellow's best is 27-2Ü.
