Supports boxing club director in feud

Web posted August 30, 1999

Editor, The Chronicle

I am writing in regard to the recent publicized feud between Vernon Forrest and Tom Moraetes who directs the Augusta Boxing Club.

I must qualify my opinion by first noting that I was an official of the Augusta Boxing Club and actively involved in training and bouts when Mr. Forrest was a participant. Mr. Forrest was a child of about 9 or 10 at the time. I always had a very favorable impression of Mr. Forrest. It should be noted that, as a child, he was not the best or the brightest star in a group of young athletes. It took a great deal of hard work on his part to achieve what he has today. However, without the Augusta Boxing Club and without Mr. Moraetes, Mr. Forrest would never have had the opportunity to achieve what he has. It took a great deal of personal sacrifice on the part of Mr. Moraetes, as well as other volunteer members of theAugusta Boxing Club, just to keep the club afloat.

The Augusta Boxing Club exists strictly for the benefit of the kids who participate. Participants who achieve a degree of success and notoriety should give back to those kids who follow in their footsteps. The Augusta Boxing Club teaches honesty, hard work and dedication. It seems that loyalty would come naturally.
