Drivers feel heat on track

BRISTOL, Tenn. - The last time the Nextel Cup Series raced at Bristol Motor Speedway, it snowed. That wasn't a problem during Saturday night's Sharpie 500.

Race time temperature was 86 degrees, but down on the track it is was nearly 100.

"It's incredible how different the track is," pole winner Kurt Busch said before the race. "I can't ever remember it being this hot for a summer race. It's 50 degrees warmer ambient temperature. The track temperature has got to be 80 degrees different. Most of the teams were finding that in qualifying."

Busch won the race at the half-mile track in March. He celebrated by doing snow angels on the finish line. Much like Tony Stewart climbing fences, snow angels have become Busch's signature celebration routine.

MARTIN WON'T RETURN FULL TIME: Mark Martin won't drive a full-time Nextel Cup Series schedule next year for Roush Racing, team president Geoff Smith told NASCAR.com.

"You won't see Mark Martin in a Roush Racing-owned (Cup) program," Smith said. "All our programs are sold out with the drivers we currently have. It was great of Mark to run this year.

"We're expecting Mark to be the lead guy in the truck series. That sponsorship is in place. We've got a couple of details to work out with Ford Motor Co., but that's where we expect to be. If he does more than that, it'll be supplemental."

Martin announced two years ago that the 2005 season would be his last in Nextel Cup, but extended his farewell tour by another year when Kurt Busch left the team to drive for Penske Racing South.

FUTURE IS NOW - FOR NOW - FOR WIMMER: Scott Wimmer barely knows week by week whether he's going to drive in the Nextel Cup Series, much less what 2007 has in store for him.

Wimmer and the No. 4 Morgan-McClure Motorsports team must qualify on speed for each race, and that hasn't always been easy.

Though he started last in Saturday night's race, Wimmer has failed to qualify for five of 23 races this year, and that doesn't create a lot of job security.

"I really don't have anything locked down for next year," he said. "As a driver you always worry about when everybody else has a ride locked up and you're kind of without anything.

Team owner Larry McClure also isn't sure about next year, especially because the team doesn't have a sponsor yet.

THE LATE SHOW: Matt Kenseth won Friday night's Food City 250 for the Busch Series in a crash-marred race that sent one driver to the hospital.

Tim Sauter had to be cut from his car after a six-car accident coming off the fourth turn on the 209th of 250 laps. He was held overnight at the Bristol Regional Medical Center for observations, then released Saturday.

Kenseth made a daring pass of race leader Kevin Harvick along the outside groove with 16 laps to go. From there he sped away to a 20-yard win. Harvick leads the Busch standings by 519 points.

PIT STOPS: NASCAR approved Toyota's request to build a racing version of the Camry next year for the Nextel Cup and Busch series. ... Car owner Ray Evernham said he hopes to expand to four teams in 2008. He plans to have three teams next year, with cars driven by Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler and Scott Riggs.
