Ace mows down dozen for Jackets

Augusta GreenJackets fans broke a record Friday night when the season attendance passed the 177,780 mark that was set a year ago.

The 4,837 fans in attendance were rewarded with one of the best all-around performances of the season from their home team.

The GreenJackets defeated the Lexington Legends 7-0 in the first of a four-game series. Starter Madison Bumgarner entered the game with the Minor League's best ERA -- 1.59. He lowered that mark, surrendering two hits in six shutout innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts.

The 19-year old ace, who topped 94 mph on the gun, said the record-breaking crowd made the night easier.

"I came off the mound and stood up and looked around, and that's when I first saw how big the crowd was," Bumgarner said. "It makes it a lot easier when it's loud like that and you know they're behind you."

Bumgarner's effort was complemented by a seven-run, eight-hit performance by the GreenJackets offense. Shane Jordan led the way with a 2-for-4 night, and Nick Noonan went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.

Lexington starter Jeff Icenogle (3-9) gave the GreenJackets their first run on the night just when it appeared he was crawling out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth.

Icenogle got Angel Villalona to ground out and fanned Andrew Davis, but with two strikes on Garrett Baker the Lexington starter threw a wild pitch to allow Juan Ciriaco to score.

The Jackets batted around in a fifth inning that saw the first five batters reach base safely. Icenogle was pulled for reliever Reid Kelly three batters in, but Kelly's third pitch went for a two-RBI double off the bat of Noonan. Ciriaco followed with another run and Baker capped the inning with a two-run triple.

The five-run fifth earned the GreenJackets a standing ovation from their fans.

"Tonight was a great crowd, and I'm glad we were able to give them something to cheer about," GreenJackets manager Andy Skeels said.
