With a nine-game hitting streak on the line, Augusta GreenJackets second baseman Nick Noonan went 0-for-4 through 10 innings in Tuesday night's home game against the West Virginia Power.
Fortunately for Noonan, the game went 11 innings.
The GreenJackets' leading hitter extended his streak and simultaneously ended the game with one swing of his bat in the bottom of the 11th.
He turned on an inside fastball from reliever Corey Frerichs and sent it over the right field wall for a walk-off homer and a 2-1 GreenJackets win.
"He went in there one time before, and he tried it again," Noonan said. "I knew it was coming."
Noonan's blast came just hours after he received a little extra instruction during the pregame batting practice from GreenJackets manager Andy Skeels and San Francisco Giants coordinator of minor league hitting instruction Bob Mariano, who joined the team for this series.
"It was just a talk about pitch selection and being able to be a little more selective, especially before you get two strikes on you," Skeels said. "I don't know that it had anything to do with what Nick did tonight, but you're always happy to have a talk with one of your guys and then it pays off right away that night. It makes you look like you know what you're talking about."
Skeels said he was also pleased with the effort of starting pitcher Craig Clark. The lefty turned in his longest outing of the season and allowed only one run on five hits through 7w innings. Reliever Ryan Paul took over in the seventh and dominated the South Atlantic League's top hitting team through the 10th inning. Of the 10 batters Paul faced, he struck out seven.
"He consistently makes me nervous," Skeels said, "but he's been a huge addition to our bullpen."
Mitch Lively, who took over for Paul in the 11th, got his first win of the season thanks to Noonan's late-inning heroics.
Frerichs (5-8) got the loss after giving up the homer to Noonan on only his second pitch of the game.
With the win, the GreenJackets tacked on another half of a game to their lead over the Columbus Catfish in the South Atlantic League's Southern Division standings.
Columbus' game against Lake County was rained out.
