The Augusta-Fort Gordon chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association will present scholarships to recent high school graduates and current college students at 5 p.m. today at the Courtyard on the Army post.

"AFCEA has supported education in the CSRA through scholarships and teaching grants," said Marla Jones, the organization's publicity chairwoman.

About $7,000 in scholarships will be presented. Recipients include Staff Sgt. James Kundert, Mary Truitt, Gerald Hendrick, Earl Stewart and Michael Baxter, who have been attending college.

Other recipients include recent high school graduates James Bullock, of Greenbrier High; Richard Kilpatrick, of T.L. Hannah High, Anderson, S.C.; Andrew Zietlow, of Fox Creek High School; William Spurlin, of Harlem High; Angela Bush, of Lakeside High School; and Kyle Johns, of Westside High School.

Scholarships are given to students pursuing degrees in math, science or engineering. The organization raises money for its scholarships through an annual golf tournament, which will be Friday, Aug. 24, at Gordon Lakes Golf Course.

The association also gives money to area educators through its teaching tool grants, which are awarded in November.

The grants provide up to $750 for elementary, middle and high school science teachers to buy materials for math and science experiments and activities in the classroom.

The chapter will begin accepting applications for the grants Sept. 1.

Over the past two decades, the chapter has provided more than $1 million in grants, scholarships and awards. Of that, more than $110,000 has gone to teacher grants and $210,000 has gone to the scholarship program.

Additional funds have been donated to the National Science Center's Fort Discovery and area science fairs. More than $375,000 has gone to events in support of Fort Gordon soldiers. For more information, visit www.afcea-augusta.org.
