Matt Dean, a McDuffie County teen accused of fatally shooting his parents and stabbing his 14-year-old sister Friday night, was listed in critical condition Sunday at a Florida hospital.
Mr. Dean, 18, was injured in a head-on collision about 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Brevard County, Fla. After being cut from his family's 2000 Ford Taurus, he was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
Mr. Dean broke both his legs and several ribs. Surgeons removed his spleen, according to Daytona Beach Police Detective Greg Burns.
The car Mr. Dean was driving struck a truck towing a fishing boat. According to the Florida Today newspaper, the truck's driver, Eddie Delawder, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the truck, Linda Hart, was in stable condition Sunday at Halifax Medical Center, the newspaper reported.
The accident occurred on Kennedy Space Center property. A NASA spokeswoman at the space center said the accident is being investigated.
Warrants in the deaths of David and Terri Dean have been issued for the teen, who also will face charges of aggravated assault in an attack on his sister, Bethany Dean, McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall said Saturday.
Sheriff Marshall did not return phone messages Sunday.
Authorities say Mr. Dean is responsible for the slayings of his parents at their home in the 3100 block of Twin Pine Road. His sister escaped and ran to a neighbor's house for help.
She is being treated at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, but officials would not discuss her condition Sunday.
Twin Pine Road is part of a new, upscale community north of Thomson. Neighbors said the Deans had built the home and moved into it in June.
McDuffie County Coroner Donnie Crawford said David Dean owned his own construction business and Mrs. Dean often helped her mother run Mallie's Flower Shop in Thomson.
