Two more Camrys will race in 2007

SPEEDWAY, Ind. - Toyota's presence in NASCAR's Nextel Cup Series expanded again Friday with the creation of Riley-D'Hondt Motorsports.

That team will build two Camrys and compete in next year's Allstate 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as well as five Car of Tomorrow events. The team hopes to be at full speed in 2008 or 2009 with two full-time Busch Series and four Cup teams.

Bill and Bob Riley helped NASCAR create its Car of Tomorrow - a car that's supposed to reduce the dependency on aerodynamics to promote more competitive racing. The new car, which is taller and wider than the current car, also will have a rear wing instead of a spoiler. The Rileys are the leading manufacturer of chassis components in the Grand American Road Racing Series with nine victories in 11 races in the Daytona Prototype division.

The team didn't offer a lot of detail about its future, except to say it already had a verbal commitment from two drivers. Eddie D'Hondt, who was fired in July as general manager at Robert Yates Racing, said the team decided to concentrate on the Car of Tomorrow because it eventually will be the only car used in NASCAR.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE: Dale Jarrett, a former winner at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, wasn't confident about his chances to return to Victory Lane. And based on his practice speeds Friday, he had a good reason.

His Ford was clocked 45th-fastest of the 50 cars that worked out on the 2.5-mile racetrack.

"I'd like to stand here and be really positive, but our goal right now with the way that we've run is getting back to running respectively," he said. "We haven't done that at all. I haven't even looked at how long it's been since we literally could race ourselves in the top 15 - back early this year."

Jarrett announced earlier this year he will leave Robert Yates Racing for one of the new rides at Michael Waltrip Racing. His teammate, Elliott Sadler, said in July he also was leaving.

Last week Yates then fired crew chiefs Tommy Baldwin and Richard "Slugger" Labbe.

"Robert and Doug (Yates) decided that they wanted to look at doing something different, and I assume that is was done in getting prepared as much for next year as anything and that's the change they decided to make."

Sadler was 42nd-quickest in the first practice session Friday and 37th-fastest in the second.

Both will return to the speedway today for pole qualifying for the Allstate 400. Time trials start at 10 a.m. and will be televised on TNT.

Ken Schrader was quickest in the first session at 180.321 mph, while Robby Gordon, who's also raced at the speedway in the Indianapolis 500, was second at 180.029.

Kurt Busch was fastest in the afternoon workout at 182.039 mph, while Kasey Kahne was second at 181.995. With 50 cars attempting qualifying, seven will miss the race. David Stremme, Scott Wimmer, Paul Menard, Stephen Leicht, Travis Kvapil, Kenny Wallace, Michael Waltrip, Kevin Lepage, Mike Skinner, Johnny Sauter, Boris Said, Derrike Cope, Chad Chaffin and Bobby Hamilton Jr. are fighting for six remaining slots in the starting lineup.

CHIEF SWITCH: Dodge Motorsports chief John Fernandez is leaving DaimlerChrysler to work with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates as managing director of the NASCAR team's Concord, N.C., racing operation.

Fernandez replaces longtime Ganassi employee Andy Graves, who was moved to a different position earlier this year.
