Fumes carry Edwards home
Crew chief's fuel strategy pays off in fourth victory

LONG POND, Pa. --- The key to Carl Edwards' win in Sunday's Sunoco American Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 was all about management -- track position, fuel and, most important, anger.

Edwards had just enough patience to get his No. 99 Ford across the Pocono Raceway finish line, and even less gasoline. But the minute his feet hit the pavement after his signature back-flip, he was able to laugh off a heated argument he had with crew chief Bob Osborne during a short rain delay.

"There's nothing like winning," Edwards said after earning $241,875 for his fourth victory of the year. "Bob did a great job. I wasn't so sure about halfway through when we were yelling at each other, but Bob did an unbelievable job. The pit crew was awesome, and luck went our way. That's as good as it gets right there."

A shower during the 129th lap caused a 41-minute delay and created two distinctive strategies. Twenty-two drivers pitted when the caution flag first waved for rain; 19 decided to stay out to gain track position.

When the race restarted, those who didn't stop still needed two pit stops to finish the race; the rest could finish with one stop. But with the threat of more bad weather, nobody thought the race would make it all 200 scheduled laps.

Edwards gave up the lead by stopping, and he angrily questioned why Osborne ordered the stop.

"The thing I'll remember most about this win is fighting with my driver during the rain delay," Osborne said. "But that's what makes a great team. Everybody's got to have an idea now and then."

Edwards re-started 22nd, but Osborne's strategy proved correct. Edwards made his final stop with 35 laps to go; he re-assumed the lead when Mark Martin made his final stop with 14 laps remaining. From there, he coasted to a 300-yard win over Tony Stewart.

Those who tried to finish on one stop after the delay knew they were cutting it close. Points leader Kyle Busch was running fifth when he ran out with two laps to go. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and David Reutimann all ran out on the final lap.

Edwards finished on fumes.
