BARNWELL, S.C. --- Government Training Institute Inc., a police and military training contractor, has moved its training facilities to Barnwell and Bamberg counties.
The company officially opened its operations in the Palmetto State on Thursday with a demonstration of police and paramilitary tactics.
The scenario involved terrorists taking over an energy plant and seizing hostages.
"This is unique -- nobody else can say they have this," said Chris Wilson, the chairman of the Bamberg County Council.
GTI will have its headquarters in a 195,000-square-foot facility in Denmark, S.C., but will hold live training exercises at the old Allied General Nuclear Services site in Barnwell.
The Allied facility was to have been a commercial spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant, but it closed in the early 1980s.
"We've got big plans for our operations in South Carolina," said Chadd Harbaugh, GTI's president.
GTI is moving its training sites to South Carolina from Boise, Idaho.
The move creates 15 new jobs in the area and $2 million in capital investment. GTI estimates that about 3,000 police officers, military personnel and other emergency officials a year will go through the training.
