County Web site lists what pupils will need
The Richmond County school system has posted school supply lists on its Web site.
To view the lists, go to www.rcboe.org and click on the students link on the left side of the page.
Individual schools are also posting supply lists on their Web sites.
School begins Aug. 11 in Richmond County.
Truck driver dies after vehicle strikes tree
CAMAK, Ga. --- A truck driver from Soperton, Ga., died in a wreck early Wednesday on Interstate 20 in Warren County, authorities said.
Warren County Coroner Paul Lowe said Prentis Marshall, 26, was killed about 7 a.m. after his truck left the roadway and slammed into a pine tree, demolishing the cab.
TRAFFIC BRIEF
- A lane closure will occur on the Georgia side of the 13th Street Bridge until Friday, according to a Richmond County Engineering Department news release.
Crews will be repairing the surface of the street and traffic will be maintained by workers in the area, the release states.
-Motorists should be aware of a nighttime lane closure that will occur on Bobby Jones Expressway between Scott Nixon Memorial Drive and Wheeler Road today and Friday.
Today's closure will last from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday's closure will be from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to a Georgia Department of Transportation news release.
New contract holder set to begin SRS takeover
Savannah River Nuclear Solutions will begin taking over operations at the Savannah River Site on Friday.
The change comes at the end of a 90-day transition from previous Management and Operations contract holder Washington Savannah River Co. A team of 18 will take over as senior managers, including Savannah River Nuclear Solutions CEO Chuck Munns.
About 6,100 employees will work under the new contract, according to Solutions spokesman Jim Gaver. Less than 2 percent of Washington Savannah River Co. employees declined offers to remain at the site. The new management structure will focus on conduct operations, according to Mr. Gaver.
Police catch man who escaped from squad car
A McDuffie County man was recaptured Wednesday after a two-hour manhunt that followed his escape from the back of a police car.
Frank Coe faces charges of escape, driving with a suspended driver's license, a tail light violation and obstruction of a law enforcement officer, according to Sgt. Kelvin Hartwell, of the Harlem Department of Public Safety.
Mr. Coe was taken into custody and handcuffed after a traffic stop near Harlem, police said, but managed to get out of the police car while authorities searched his pickup. A tracking dog helped police find him in a wooded area, and he was being held in the Columbia County Detention Center in Appling.
Suspect is arrested in break-in at pharmacy
A Martinez man was arrested Wednesday, accused in the Monday break-in at a Wrightsboro Road pharmacy.
Caleb John Schafner, 22, faces one count of burglary, said Richmond County sheriff's Sgt. Horace Anderson. Mr. Schafner is suspected of cutting a hole in the roof of Summerville Pharmacy and stealing an unknown amount of hydrocodone, according to police. Sgt. Anderson said the pharmacy has been broken into four times and police are continuing to question Mr. Schafner about those incidents.
