School system has made great strides
Letter to the Editor

Apparently, The Augusta Chronicle does not take too kindly to being questioned about their methods of mathematical calculations. This was evidenced by their July 27 editorial ("It's the system") whereby it asserted that instead of Dr. Dana Bedden, superintendent of Richmond County schools, questioning The Chronicle's accuracy, he and the board should urgently consider radical changes to the system. It then suggested considerations of all schools being magnet schools; adopting the Gainesville model; becoming a charter system; or school choice.

The Chronicle should be aware that Dr. Bedden has already brought about numerous changes to this system in his first year in office, some of which could be considered by many to be radical. Upon his arrival, he requested an outside audit be performed throughout the system.

These recommendations from the consulting firm, MGT, were presented in March. Several of these already have been carried out by Dr. Bedden and his staff, which is a departure from the usual response to studies done in our town. Changes have involved reorganizations of numerous departments and in operational procedures to allow for greater efficiency and savings.

Dr. Bedden has been aggressive in restoring community relations among community and parent organizations, the media and other governmental agencies. Also in progress is a comprehensive study by an outside professional consultant, with community input, to help us determine the best use of our schools -- both academics and buildings. This process will address various forms schools could take.

Two issues to keep in mind regarding magnets, charters, school choice, etc.: transportation costs and our court order. As to the teacher accountability and student pre- and post-testing of the Gainesville model, action in these areas is currently being implemented, as discussed in board meetings throughout last year.

Give Dr. Bedden and this system a little more time. He is quite a capable superintendent, but not Superman.
