An Augusta man was killed instantly Wednesday after his minivan was struck by an 18-wheeler hauling logs near Swainsboro, according to the Georgia State Patrol's Swainsboro post.

Woodward W. Moss, 51, of the 2200 block of Overton Road, was pronounced dead at the scene by Emanuel County Coroner W. Jeffrey Peebles at about 1:55 p.m.

Mr. Moss died from multiple blunt force trauma, Mr. Peebles said.

Authorities said Mr. Moss pulled out in front of the tractor-trailer near U.S. Highway 1 and Georgia Highway 297. He was a sales representative for New Jersey-based Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and was married with three children, the coroner said.

The accident occurred at about 12:40 p.m., about four miles south of Swainsboro, police said.

The truck driver, who was not identified, was not injured, the coroner said.

Mr. Moss was alone and not wearing a seat belt, Mr. Peebles said.

Man dies after being pulled out of pool

A Martinez man who was pulled from an Evans subdivision swimming pool died Wednesday morning.

William Guy, 34, of the 500 block of Hunterdale Road, Martinez, was pronounced dead at Doctors Hospital at 9:32 a.m., Columbia County Coroner Tommy King said.

Mr. Guy was playing with his son in Glennwood subdivision's pool at about 7 p.m. Tuesday when lifeguard Ashley Wilmer, 17, noticed he had not returned to the water's surface, authorities said.

Ms. Wilmer pulled Mr. Guy from the pool and performed CPR before emergency medical technicians took him to the hospital.

It was the second drowning in two days in Columbia County. On Tuesday, the body of Jerry L. McCloud, 45, of the 1000 block of Greene Street, was recovered from Thurmond Lake at Wildwood Park.

Mr. King said preliminary autopsy results determined the cause of death as drowning but that authorities are awaiting test results on whether alcohol was involved.

Two men serving life are denied parole

Two men serving life sentences in unrelated Augusta murders have been denied parole.

The State Board of Pardons and Paroles announced Wednesday in a news release that Walter Williams, 55, and Ronnie Melton, 50, won't be reviewed again for possible early release until 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Mr. Williams is serving a life sentence for the slaying of 27-year-old Ronald E. Anderson, of Belvedere, who was lured to Augusta by Mr. Williams and three others May 17, 1976.

The killer stole $36 and the victim's car.

Mr. Melton is serving life for the May 5, 1983, slaying of 29-year-old Fred Howarth, a college student who was working one of his two jobs when he was shot to death on Commerce Drive, according to news reports.

Suit is filed for woman who died in car crash

The administrator in charge of the estate of a woman killed in a drunken-driving crash has filed suit against the man responsible for the accident and the bar where he was allegedly drinking that day.

Willie J. Hicks filed the Richmond County Superior Court lawsuit Tuesday against David W. Fulcher and Durango's Bar and Grill.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the estate of Daisy Hicks Oliver, who was killed July 30, 2002, along with her niece Hattie Mae Umoh.

According to Augusta Chronicle reports, an intoxicated Mr. Fulcher crashed into the back of Ms. Umoh's vehicle on Deans Bridge Road.

Mr. Fulcher plead guilty to vehicular homicide in February 2003.

He is serving a 25-year prison sentence.

Roast of sheriff to aid Boy Scouts in need

Officials will hold a roast in honor of Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength tonight to raise money for activities for economically disadvantaged Boy Scouts, according to the Boy Scouts of the Georgia/Carolina Council.

The roast will be held at 6 p.m. at The Boathouse at the Augusta Riverfront Marina, said Linda Griffith, the organization's finance director.

Featured "roasters" include District Attorney Danny Craig and 9th District State Transportation Board member Bill Kuhlke, she said.

A silent auction will also be held.

Tickets cost $40 for the public and $20 for law enforcement officers with a badge, she said.

For information, call 733-5277.

School officials opt to keep same millage

Columbia County school officials set a millage for the new fiscal year in a rollback hearing Wednesday, keeping last year's 17.18 mill rate unchanged.

With the 8.1 percent growth in Columbia County last year, Superintendent Tommy Price estimates the system will receive an additional $900,000 to $1 million in fiscal year 2004-05.

Georgia requires any government agency collecting property taxes to hold three public hearings if it does not roll back millages after reassessment of property values.

The extra money still won't be enough to offset a $5 million shortage in the budget. To make up the deficit, school officials will dip into the system's reserve fund.

Mr. Price blames the shortfall on statewide budget cuts.

New Ellenton fire crews will get grant

The New Ellenton Volunteer Fire Department will receive a $147,848 federal grant for operations and firefighter-safety programs.

U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett and U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republicans, announced the award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of Domestic Preparedness in a joint statement Wednesday.

The New Ellenton grant is one of six given to South Carolina fire departments totaling $845,000, said U.S. Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, D-S.C.
