SUMMERTON - Residents in this tiny town in Clarendon County thought they were going to get recognized as one of the best towns in the country.
Instead, they found out they were caught in a scam.
A man who called himself John Gilbert told Summerton officials last week the town had been chosen by USA Today as one of America's best small towns and would be featured in a story Tuesday.
Mr. Gilbert then sold the town 150 bumper stickers recognizing the accomplishment for $175, officials said.
The town found out about the scam when the story didn't run. Officials were able to stop payment on the check.
