ATLANTA - An employee of the Atlanta Police Department has been fired after being accused of using financial information from an officer's bank account to make a $700 online purchase.

Lakeisha Nicole Griffith, 22, who worked in the department's fiscal division, was fired after her arrest on a financial identity theft charge Friday, the department said.

The officer, who works on the department's SWAT team, noticed July 6 that $700 had been withdrawn from his bank account and used to make a purchase at Lowe's.

Investigators identified Ms. Griffith from surveillance tapes.

Home invasion ends with suspect dead

ATLANTA - A suspect is dead and another man wounded after an apparent home invasion in downtown Atlanta early Wednesday morning.

Police answered a call at about 12:30 a.m. to gated apartments across from the Atlanta Civic Center.

A burglar entered the apartment and shot one of the men inside, police said. But the man's brother fired back with a gun of his own.

The suspect was dead at the scene, Police Sgt. Bob Creasy said. The brother who was shot was brought to Grady Memorial Hospital for surgery.

The boy, Ayan Wilder, went missing Tuesday night from his home after he was last seen watching television, said his mother, Tiffany Wilder.

Authorities used a helicopter and bloodhounds to search for the boy. Ayan apparently drowned, authorities said.

Man is fatally shot while chasing robbers

NORCROSS - A man chasing three masked robbers out of his home died after he was shot in the chest, police said.

The robbers knocked on the door of 36-year-old Scott Michael Monty early Tuesday morning and forced their way in, said Detective J.P. Wilbanks, of Gwinnett police. Then they pulled out a gun and demanded money.

Mr. Monty struggled with one of the robbers and pursued him outside the duplex, when he was shot once in the chest, Detective Wilbanks said.
