OK, everybody, be cool
Take care to avoid heat-related illnesses this summer

What you're reading now is what journalists call a "duty" editorial. in which we regularly repeat an important message -- get out and vote, don't be irresponsible with fireworks, don't drink and drive.

So with temperatures hovering in the 90s this summer, it can't be stressed enough that we all must avoid prolonged heat exposure.

That's because heat exhaustion and heat stroke are conditions we think can happen only to other people. But it's that attitude that leads to too many cases of heat-related illnesses.

Know the difference. Heat exhaustion is what happens after too much time in the sun with too few fluids. You feel overheated, nauseous, achy, fatigued and light-headed. Heat stroke is when heat exhaustion advances to the point that you actually stop sweating, and are in danger of losing consciousness.

So know your limits during this long, hot summer. Hydrate often. If you must work outside, take frequent breaks. And know that the elderly and small children are the most susceptible to heat illness.

Just please keep your cool.
